What Happens to the Electronics Collected During E-Waste Events?

Earth Month events are a great way for organizations to engage employees, support sustainability initiatives, and responsibly clear out retired electronics.

But once the event ends and the equipment is picked up, many people naturally wonder:

What actually happens to all those devices?

At Evergreen IT Solutions, collection is only the beginning. The equipment gathered during workplace and Earth Month e-waste events goes through a structured R2V3-certified process, supported by our ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 certifications, ensuring electronics are handled responsibly, securely, and in full compliance with state and federal regulations.

Step 1: Sorting and Evaluation

Once electronics arrive at our facility, they are sorted by device type and evaluated based on condition.

This step helps determine whether equipment can be reused, refurbished, or directed toward material recovery — maximizing value while minimizing waste.

All sorting and evaluation processes are performed in accordance with R2V3 standards, which are designed to promote responsible reuse and recycling practices.

Step 2: Secure Data Erasure or Shredding

For data-bearing devices such as laptops, desktops, servers, and hard drives, secure handling is critical. Depending on the device and client requirements, equipment goes through either secure data erasure or physical destruction, following industry-recognized standards such as NIST 800-88 guidelines.

Documentation is available for organizations that require records for compliance, including Certificates of Data Destruction.

This ensures that sensitive information is handled in a way that meets both internal policies and regulatory requirements.

Step 3: SSDs and MacBooks Require Special Handling

Not all storage devices can be removed as easily as traditional hard drives.

Many newer devices — especially MacBooks and laptops with integrated SSDs — store data directly on the motherboard. In these cases, the SSD cannot simply be removed and shredded as a separate component.

To properly secure these devices, specialized handling is required. Depending on the device and service level, components may be manually destroyed or physically processed to ensure data is completely unrecoverable.

These processes are performed in alignment with R2V3 and ISO-certified procedures, ensuring proper handling of modern devices while maintaining compliance with data security standards.

Step 4: Reuse and Refurbishment

Whenever possible, electronics that still have usable life are prepared for reuse or refurbishment. Extending the life of technology helps reduce environmental impact and supports more sustainable use of valuable resources.

R2V3 guidelines prioritize reuse whenever appropriate, helping organizations support circular economy practices while maintaining compliance.

Step 5: Responsible Material Recovery

Equipment that can no longer be reused is dismantled and processed for responsible material recovery. Materials such as metals, plastics, and components are separated and sent through certified downstream partners and refineries, ensuring proper environmental handling.

All downstream processes are vetted to meet R2V3, environmental, and regulatory compliance standards, helping ensure materials are processed safely and responsibly.

Why This Matters

Proper electronics recycling is about more than simply removing old devices from the workplace. It’s about ensuring equipment is managed responsibly after pickup — with attention to environmental impact, data security, and full compliance with state and federal regulations.

That’s why certifications matter.

By working with an R2V3 and ISO-certified recycler, organizations gain confidence that their equipment is handled according to strict standards designed to protect both their data and the environment.

At Evergreen IT Solutions, we’re proud to help organizations across the Bay Area make electronics recycling easier, more secure, and fully compliant.

If your team is considering a future workplace or employee recycling event, we’d be happy to help.
